How to Find out your Partner's Ring Size

How to Find out your Partner's Ring Size

So, you’ve decided that you’re going to pop the question, now all you need to do is find the perfect engagement ring!

But first, there’s the little matter of figuring out what size ring to buy. This can be a bit of a tricky issue as you probably don’t know your partners exact ring size.

Thankfully, we’re here to lend you a hand with some great tips on how to find out!

Bring one of their rings to a jewellers

If your partner already wears rings, one great way to figure out their size is to bring one of their rings to a jewellers to have it sized.

Of course, you will have to make sure it’s a ring that they won’t miss for a day or two while you get the measurements carried out!

Also, make sure that the ring is for the correct finger!

Measure their finger while they’re asleep

This method can be a little risky, but if your partner is a deep sleeper you can try and measure their ring size while they’re fast asleep. You can use a piece of string or even an actual ring sizer (you can find these online for next to nothing).

It may take you a couple of nights to get the correct measurements but this is one of the best ways to ensure that your engagement plans remain under wraps.

Sketch one of their rings

If you are concerned that your partner will miss one of their rings if it’s missing for a couple of hours, take a piece of paper and draw a line around the inside of the ring.

If you bring this to the jeweller they will be able to make a decent stab at finding the right size.

Enlist a Friend

One fun way to figure out the right ring size is to enlist your partner’s best friends to help you. You can ask them to sneak the topic into conversation to see if your partner already knows the exact right size, or even ask an engaged friend to let your partner try on their own engagement ring and report back to you if it was a good fit or not.

Try on one of their rings and then compare your hands

This method is not super accurate, but if you run out of options you can always try on one of their rings on your own finger and then ry to gauge the difference between your hand and theirs.

Just Ask!

Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly common for couples to have honest and open conversations about potentially getting engaged at some point in the future. Take the opportunity to ask your partner what size ring they take (and also which style they would prefer) directly. This doesn’t necessarily spoil the surprise as the engagement itself can still be at an unexpected time/place.

Get it re-sized!

Despite your best efforts, you may end up being a bit off the mark when it comes to finding the exact right size. However, there is no need to worry as you can often get it re-sized at a reputable jewellers (when you are buying the ring make sure to ask if it re-sizable!)

Most experts advise to opt for a ring that is slightly too big if you are not sure of the exact size as it is much easier to size a ring up than it is to size it down.

Fake it!

One option that has become popular recently is to buy a low-cost ring for the actual engagement, and then bring your partner to the jewellers to pick out the one they actually want. This way you surprise them, while at the same time making sure that they will end up with something that they really love!

Hold Hands

If you are planning on popping the question to your partner, you will (hopefully!) be holding hands fairly often. Next time that your hands are entwined, try and gauge if their ring finger is similar in size to any of your fingers, and then use that as your point of reference.

This is not the most trustworthy method, but it is worth a shot if you have exhausted all other options!

So there you have it! Are you in the process of picking out the perfect engagement ring? We’d love to help!
